Altona is a small town with a big heart. It is a safe, clean and friendly community with a history of welcoming newcomers.  We invite you to explore our website to learn more about Altona – you can learn about our core services, business community, tourism attractions and local governance.

The Town of Altona has a state of the art 75,000 sq. ft. multi-use recreation facility called the Millennium Exhibition Centre. The facility is a central gathering place for the community and hosts many events such as hockey tournaments, curling bonspiels, banquets, socials, weddings, recreation programs, meetings, craft facilities, and a place to get together with friends and family. Learn more about recreation here!

Our community is proud to offer many key institutions, non-profit organizations and services which support the settlement of newcomers.

Regional Connections Immigrant Services provides “one-stop-shop” settlement services for newcomers to Altona. These services include: Needs assessment and referral, Information and orientation, Employment services, Language assessment, Language training, Care for Newcomer Children, Community Connections, Cultural Diversity Training and Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS).

Border Land School Division (BLSD) and school staff to help orient, connect, and integrate newcomer students to their new school and community. Programming focuses on building connections between newcomer students and non-newcomer students at the school and within the community, and to support parental engagement. The SWIS workers have an acute focus on the students to assist them and their families to understand the school system and have success. Programming is responsive to the needs of students. Border Land School Division offers French Immersion from Kindergarten to grade 8.

Pembina Valley Local Immigration Partnership (PVLIP)is a multi-sector partnership designed to improve the integration of immigrants and newcomers in the Pembina Valley, and to strengthen the region’s ability to better address the needs of newcomers. PVLIP provides opportunities for newcomers to connect with local ethno-cultural groups as a way to meet new people, including learning about and participating in popular community events, join community groups and taking part in some sport or popular recreation activity.

Build A Village is a volunteer based non-for-profit organization with approximately fifteen (15) years of experience in helping newcomers adapt to life in Canada. The volunteers provide assistance in the following areas: Transportation, Health, Education, Shopping, Home maintenance, Tech support and Finances.

English Café is a weekly gathering where newcomers come to practice conversational English with volunteers. English Café is about not only learning English and navigating a new life in Canada but more importantly about building relationships and connections so as to join together to all work for the common good.

The Altona Community Memorial Health Centre is staffed with experienced medical professionals. This hospital combines state-of-the-art technology with comfortable, homey accommodations. A fully-trained ambulance service and 24-hour hospital emergency service ensure complete peace of mind.
